How the Canon 5D Mark IV Blew My Mind with Its Awesome Features and Performance
Hello, fellow photopeoples! If you’re looking for a full-frame DSLR that can do it all, look no further than the Canon 5D Mark IV. This camera is a monster of a device that can handle anything from landscapes to portraits to wildlife to weddings. It offers a ton of features and options that will make your photography more fun and creative.
(AI collaboration) The Canon 5D Mark IV is a full-frame camera that boasts a 30.4 megapixel CMOS sensor with a dual-pixel AF technology that allows for fast and accurate focus in both stills and video. It has a DIGIC 6+ image processor that enables a 7 fps continuous shooting speed, a 4K video recording capability, and an ISO range of 100-32000 (expandable to 50-102400). It also has a 61-point AF system with 41 cross-type points and 5 dual cross-type points that covers a large area of the frame and offers various modes and options for different scenarios. It also has a 3.2 inch touchscreen LCD with 1.62 million dots that can be tilted for different angles. It also has built-in Wi-Fi, GPS, and NFC for easy connectivity and geotagging. It’s a camera that can handle almost any situation, from landscapes to portraits to wildlife to weddings.
But thats all about specs and technical terms here are some of the reasons I got a 5D Mark IV:
- The image quality is superb. The 30.4 megapixel sensor delivers images that are sharp and detailed, even at high ISOs. The colors are rich and accurate, thanks to the improved color science and the new Picture Style options. The dynamic range is impressive, as it can capture both highlights and shadows in high-contrast scenes. The noise performance is excellent, as it can produce clean images even at ISO 12800 or higher. The RAW files are also very flexible and easy to work with in post-processing, as they offer a lot of latitude for adjustments and corrections.
- The autofocus system is fast and reliable. The 61-point AF system covers a large area of the frame and offers various modes and options for different scenarios. You can choose between single-point AF, zone AF, large zone AF, or automatic selection AF. You can also customize the AF points according to your preference and shooting style. You can also use the touchscreen LCD to select or change the focus point with a touch of your finger. The dual-pixel AF technology also works great for live view and video shooting, allowing smooth and accurate focus tracking.
- (AI Collaboration) The video quality is stunning. The 4K video recording offers a high level of detail and clarity, as well as various frame rates and formats to choose from. You can record in DCI 4K (4096 x 2160) at 24p or 30p, or in UHD 4K (3840 x 2160) at 24p or 30p. You can also record in Full HD (1920 x 1080) at up to 60p, or in HD (1280 x 720) at up to 120p for slow-motion effects. You can also choose between MOV or MP4 formats, as well as between ALL-I or IPB compression methods. You can also use the Dual Pixel RAW feature to extract still images from your 4K videos with adjustable focus point and bokeh effect. The camera also has a headphone jack and a microphone jack for better audio quality and monitoring. The dual-pixel AF also makes video shooting easier and more enjoyable, as it can smoothly follow moving subjects or switch focus points with a touch of the screen.
- The ergonomics and fit of the camera in hand is comfortable and intuitive with the button placement. The camera has a solid and sturdy build, but it’s not too heavy or bulky. The customizable buttons are in a fantastic place on the primary body and the battery grip.
Of course, no camera is perfect, and the Canon 5D Mark IV has some drawbacks as well. Here are some of the things I don’t like about it:
- The price is steep for an older camera (2016). The Canon 5D Mark IV is not a cheap camera even used it cost me $950 on sale, especially if you factor in the cost of lenses and accessories. It’s definitely an investment that requires careful consideration and budgeting. If you’re not a professional or serious hobbyist, you might want to look for cheaper alternatives that offer similar features and performance. See the Canon R7 mirrorless or Canon 80D or the Canon 5D MK3.
- The battery life is poor at the start with the single battery but with the addition of the battery grip it is much better. The 5D Mark IV uses the LP-E6N battery. I usually get around 650-700 shots per battery, which is not bad, but not great either the Canon 90D is over 1000 shots per battery. I always carry spare batteries with me when I go out shooting.
- The 4K video recording while good has some limitations. The video files are huge and take up a lot of space on your memory card and your computer during editing. The 4K video recording has a 1.74x crop factor, which means you’ll lose some of the wide-angle view of your lenses and Rolling shutter does begin to have an effect at slower shutter speeds. See rolling shutter
- The touch screen while bright is fixed in place so it cannot be tilted or its angle adjusted.
Overall, I think the Canon 5D Mark IV is a fantastic camera that delivers on its promises but isn’t extraordinary giving the more modern releases. still, i’s a versatile and reliable tool that can handle almost any challenge you throw at it. It’s also a fun and enjoyable to use and it allows me to be more creative and adventurous with my photography than my last camera (Canon 7D mk1).
If you’re looking for a full-frame DSLR that offers high image quality, fast autofocus, stunning video recording, and great ergonomics, you can’t go wrong with the Canon 5D Mark IV.
