Exploring parking lots

Have you ever walked through a parking lot? Or c a sidewalk slanted in a particular way? Have you ever noticed how the interstates are ever so slightly gridged in the middle? Or how every slab of concrete seems to slant in one uniform direction? It’s all by design.

It’s all for water management. It was surveyed and designed by an engineer whose sole job is to study and plan for how water will effect the environment. These individuals are called hydrological engineers. They study hydrology. Or the science of water flow. They know how to make things flow and they know how to stop things from flowing. Aquifers cisterns, damns, sewer systems, water runoff, all of these things are specifically designed to deal with water in a specific way at a specific rate at specific times.

Without their careful planning we would see water backing up all over the place and causing damage to people and property, agriculture and industry.

So next time your neighborhood Streets don’t back up with water, take a moment and think about the individuals that designed, created, installed, and maintained that system that we don’t even notice.

But I guarantee that you’ll think of them if something ever happens to compromise that intricate system.
