Have you ever stopped to think about how fast humans travel? And I don’t mean how quick they are to move on from one location to another I mean physical traveling. The act of moving from one place to another at speed. In a car train plane motorcycle, bus, whatever method you prefer everyone travels at speed.
Now this speed isn’t always immense, some people prefer to drive 35 miles an hour no matter where they are, and still others prefer to push the limit of what their vehicles can physically achieve.
But either way, it is only within the last 250ish years that any land dwelling creature could go faster than 60 miles an hour. There are some birds that can reach incredible speeds but I’m focusing on mammals here. A simple drive to the convenience store or the groggy morning pickup of coffee or the long distance travel to see family across your state or province. These are activities that we approach so casually, but we should remember that we have the capability to achieve a speed faster than almost any living thing in existence since the dawn of time.
And it is a capability so fundamental to our society that it’s not something we even think about as a marvel. I wonder what speeds we will achieve in our future that would seem marvelous to us now but will be commonplace for them.
