Delayed repercussions

Are you familiar with postponed repercussions? It’s when you know there’s something that will cause issues but rather than dealing with it right now you push it off to some future unknown date. The recognition of something is not right and eventually will need to be dealt with but it can be ignored right now and someone else can deal with it later.

An organization I’m affiliated with is currently experiencing this phenomenon. A construction project completed almost a decade ago had elements that were intentionally ignored because they didn’t “have” to be dealt with at that time. In the moment it saved quite a bit of funding and freed up resources and time to be able to work on other projects.

Now 10 years down the line more money and more time are required then would initially have been needed.

This is an example of delayed repercussions. Don’t put off dealing with issues for short-term gains. Instead focus on long-term stability. When it’s possible it’s better to only have to do something once.
